The stepped sides of this double sided pendant contain an etching of the Holy Child, and engraved Italian.
“Against all odds” or contro ogni aspettativa is a phrase that is closely associated with the knight heroine Bradamante. A character of Renaissance poetry she wields a magic lance, which she uses to save the man she loves - Ruggiero - from a wizard named Atlantes. A devout Christian, she refuses to marry Ruggiero unless he converts to her religion. Despite his agreeing, her parents still objected to the marriage, so she made an agreement with them that she would marry whoever could best her in combat. Ruggiero won, and they lived happily together until the end of their days, founding the noble House of Este together.
