For some time now, I've been dreaming of a way to do a Stela 9 experience in the US. As fate would have it, I was recently connected with the owners of a group of designer adobe homes that sit on a private 43 acre reserve and couldn't resist doing everything in my power to make this trip happen. One of the reasons I'm so drawn to this specific location is because famed artist, Georgia O'Keeffe first came out this way in 1940 and purchased an adobe home for herself on a vast 21,000 acre tract of land called Ghost Ranch. This stunningly beautiful area of the painted desert is just eighteen miles north of Abiquiu. This landscape heavily inspired her works after 1929 (11 years before she made it her home). Like many great artists, O’Keeffe’s life also equated to her artwork. Beyond simply just her paintings, her home, gardens, fashion and lifestyle continue to inspire us even 26 years after her passing.

We'll be staying on THE LAND:

THE LAND is a private 43 acre property nestled in a mountain valley near Abiquiu, in northern New Mexico. The land sits tucked between the famous Cerro Pedernal mountain and Santa Fe National Forest, and features epic views of both mountains and plains. It is an event space (retreats, reunions, workshops, etc) and a vacation rental property. There are 5 houses, a large finished livable barn, horse stables, a greenhouse, an orchard, and a yoga platform.

The property is also known as “La Cienegita”, or “The Little Swamp”. In many places this might bear a negative connotation, but in the high desert of New Mexico it’s a compliment. Polvadera Creek runs through the property, and off it an acequia (irrigation ditch) fed by natural springs bubble up from mountain aquifers keeps the flora green for most of the year. There are fruit trees throughout the property, as well as beautiful native wildflowers.

Animal life on the property is vibrant. Beavers, Black Bears, Bullfrogs, Mountain Lions, Hummingbirds, name a few of our neighbors and visitors. You can fish for Brook Trout in the creek during certain seasons.

THE LAND is in beautiful and enchanted Northern New Mexico. It’s a little over an hour to Santa Fe, an hour and a half to Taos, two hours to Albuquerque and 5 hours to Telluride, Colorado.

As close as it is to all those amazing places, it lives in its own private secluded valley. By design, The Land is just far away enough from everything to feel safe, secure and untouched. Sitting on the deck of the Main House at sunset, one cannot see another house as far as the eye can see.

She gains inspiration on her vast travels through 65+ countries, immersing in the local cultures and diving into her passions of food, hospitality, design, art, music, travel and all things ancient wisdom.

Jess Bercovici is the founder of Casa de Stela and has owned and operated the business for the last 12 years. She first traveled to Latin America in 2007 as an archaeologist and immediately fell in love with the textiles and ancient crafts in Guatemala. Her introduction to tourism happened by chance in Guatemala in 2015 when her first of two bnb's were opened. It was in this space that she hosted craft courses and weeklong retreats for artists wanting to immerse themselves in stunning Guatemala. In the last 7 years, these programs have grown to include experiences in Mexico City, Oaxaca and New Mexico.
